There are an estimated 48 million cases for foodborne illness in the United States every year. Many of these preventable illnesses are attributed to violations in handling in retail establishments. The North Carolina Food Code requires certification of a person-in-charge.Safe Plates logo

The Safe Plates Certified Food Protection Manager training program is offered by N.C. Cooperative Extension Agents at local county centers. Managers trained in NC Safe Plates create a work environment that minimizes food safety risks in their restaurants, cafeterias, and grocery stores through best practices, open communication, and thoughtful practice.

In 2017, the Safe Plates Certified Food Protection Manager training program awarded to 631 people, providing relevant retail food safety training and certification opportunities. Also, Safe Plates was also implemented into Foods and Nutrition 1, a Career and Technical Education course, thus reaching approximately 31,000 students in North Carolina public high schools in 2017-18.
