Davie County was represented at the 2019 Yadkin-Davie 4-H Livestock Show on August 10th by six youth showing sheep under Davie County FFA. Jesse Ledbetter, the agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor at Davie County High School, coached and led the group to many titles at the show, including six 1st place showings, reserve champion market lamb, and grand champion ewe lamb.

The group consisted of Jarret Barnes, 16; Nathan Haskin, 16; Addy Buchanan, 10; Charlee Dyson, 8; Elizabeth Anderson, 17; and Bailey Dyson, 15. When they received their lambs in June, the first thing they did was name them. Daily activities for the group included feeding, watering, and walking Bubbles, Vanilla Bean, Cheyenne, Sarah, Shelby, Dixie, Mini, and Jean. The students also tracked the lambs’ weights to determine feed efficiency and the health of the lambs.

For three students, this was their first experience raising and showing a lamb. Prior to the show, lambs must be sheared and washed. During the show, sheep are generally entered into one of two categories: market lambs and breeding ewes. Within those categories, sheep are separated into classes by weight. Market lambs are judged on muscling and meat quality, while ewes are judged on their ability to be good mothers and raise quality lambs.

Of the group’s accomplishments, Mr. Ledbetter is extremely proud. “Showing takes patience, time, sweat, and sometimes a few tears,” Ledbetter said. “I grew up showing lambs and it builds character and confidence,” something that all students, and especially the first-time showmen, gained at the show.
