message boardCOVID-19, what a word, it has so much power over us right now. It’s changed our daily lives. People are having to reschedule their weddings and worry about who will be allowed in the delivery room when they welcome their baby into the world. Graduations, proms, and school sports have been canceled, it’s a surreal time for all. Some of us are working from home and trying to figure out how to really embrace technology, while others have been sent home from their jobs not knowing if or when they will go back. How can we make sure we are keeping ourselves healthy physically and mentally?

Get Up and Move

Try to take 30 minutes out of your day to get your heart pumping. Working from home has me in a totally different routine. It can be so easy to just get out of bed, grab some coffee and head to your workspace, but lets do something better for ourselves. When I get up in the morning, I like to go ahead and get a good 30-minute workout in. This has been the best way for me to start the day.

Get Outside

Fresh air really does the body and mind good. It is the perfect time to be thinking about starting a garden or update the flower bed. Go for a short walk around the house, take the dog for a walk or just sit out on your back deck and practice some deep breathing.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Make sure to continue to focus on the MyPlate nutritional guidelines. Do your best to eat vegetables, fruits, proteins, grains and a dairy for each meal. I’m not sure what it is about being home all day, but all I want to do is snack. Make sure when you are choosing snack foods that they are something healthy and not full of fat and sugar, like cookies.

Take a Social Media Break

Social media seems to also have a lot of power over us during this pandemic. Try to only visit websites that are reputable sources that are research-based. With all of the information out there, both accurate and inaccurate, it can seem overwhelming and honestly, quite confusing. Take a break from the social media outlets every once in a while. Put down your phone or computer and step outside or dive into a good book.

These are strange times and we need to make sure we are still focusing our energy on keeping ourselves physically and mentally healthy. It is inevitable that the walls will start to close in and we will go stir crazy. Hopefully, following a few of these guidelines will help keep the walls at bay.
