The 4-H Summer Fun logo.

4-H Summer Fun is a collection of educational workshops, tours, and hands-on activities planned especially for Rutherford County youth. This special program is designed to give youth positive learning opportunities and focus on developing life skills. Summer Fun is made possible by dedicated 4-H volunteers and N.C. Cooperative Extension Center, Rutherford County Center staff. 4-H invites all children to participate in the Fun.

4-H is a non-formal youth development organization and is open to all youth, Age 5-18 in Rutherford County. All fees are for educational supplies, resources, admission fees, limited insurance, and refreshments. Limited insurance will be provided for all participants.

All 4-H participants must be registered as Members in 4-H Online https://v2.4honline.com for all waivers and health forms. These must be completed and approved no later than 2 days before the participant’s first session.

Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the class, to Cynthia Robbins at 828-287-6190 or cynthia_robbins@ncsu.edu

Registration will open on Tuesday, May 31 at 9:00 a.m.. After then, you may register during regular office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration will be taken in person only. No registration will be accepted by telephone. Payment is due at the time of registration. Activities are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register only one child per form.

Refunds will only be made if choice of class is canceled.

Sessions include:

Taking the Reins– Tuesday, June 14  8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

We will travel to Lamb Horse Farm to learn about horses, horsemanship, safety, and more. Students will have the opportunity to ride horses. (Helmets are required by all riders and will be provided.) We will also do other horse-y fun activities.

Ages: 8-12                                        Cost: $40

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

*An extra waiver form is required by Lamb Horse Farms.

Under the Sea Art – Wednesday, June 15,  9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Come paint your own under-the-sea creation on a canvas and aquatic ceramic creature. You can also paint your own creations on seashells. All materials will be supplied.

*Class will be held at the Rutherford County Livestock Educational facility. Students will meet at the Extension office and travel together.

Ages: 5-7                               Cost: $20

Wear old clothes.

Oceanic Acrylics– Wednesday, June 15, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

It’s a whole new world under the sea. Come create your own marine-themed masterpiece! Youth will also paint a ceramic ocean critter and seashells. All materials will be supplied.

*Class will be held at the Rutherford County Livestock Educational facility. Students will meet at the Extension office and travel together.

Ages: 9 and up                                  Cost: $20

Wear old clothes.

Archery 101 – Friday, June 17, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

We will learn about basic hunters’ safety and the basics of archery. Each participant will have the opportunity to learn and enhance their archery skills. Archery materials will be provided.

Ages: 10-16                                     Cost: $8

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on outside, and hat or sunglasses. Wear sunscreen.

Plants and Pollinators – Monday-Tuesday, June 27-28,  9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

This two-day camp will be perfect for kids who are curious about plants and how they grow, as well as the types of plants and insects that make it possible for us to enjoy flowers and fruit. We’ll get our hands dirty with planting, make some fun garden crafts, and get a really good look at bees, pollinators, and decomposers, that make healthy gardens possible. This will be a great camp to connect kids to the natural environment via plants and insect friends.

Ages: 8-11                                        Cost: $25

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear closed-toe shoes.

Pollinator Pals – Wednesday, June 29, 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

Come learn about pollinators, including butterflies, bees and more! We will go on a nature walk, play insect games, plant pollinator plants, study habitats, life cycles, and more!

Ages: 5-8                                          Cost: $10

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink.

Mooving with Milk – Friday, July 1, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

We will explore the wonderful world of Dairy! We will learn about dairy cows and how they make milk for us to drink! We will make butter and sample different dairy products. We will visit a dairy farm and sample their ice cream.

Ages: 7-10                                        Cost: $16

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Booster seats are required for youth under 8 or 80 pounds.

 

Cloverbud Arts – Tuesday, July 5, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

We will have fun expressing our creativity. We will paint suncatchers, make mugs, and art out of seeds and beans. We will also explore old-fashioned toys, toys and crafts from other countries, and more!

Ages: 5-8                               Cost: $12

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear old clothes.

 

Kids and Chefs – Monday-Friday, July 18-22, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This hands-on day camp is taught by local chefs and Cooperative Extension staff with a focus on agriculture and nutrition. Each day of camp features cooking, games, and crafts. Participants will learn about farm production, food selection, cooking techniques, etiquette, and safe food handling. All supplies will be provided. Youth who love to try new foods will love this class! Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Ages: 10-13                                       Cost: $95

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink for Monday only. Wear closed-toe shoes each day.

Camp, Cook, Play– Friday, August 5, 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

Come enjoy the basics of food safety and nutrition, especially for kids! We will also have fun cooking some of our own foods! Be sure to wear comfortable clothing.

Ages: 8-12                                        Cost: $8

Gone Fishing– Tuesday, August 9, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

We will travel up to the Marion Fish Hatchery to see how fish are raised to stock your favorite fishing streams and ponds. We will enjoy a few hours of fishing in well-stocked pond. Fishing rods, bait and materials will be supplied.

Ages: 8-14                                         Cost: $10

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear sunscreen and bring hat or sunglasses and a towel.

Sweet Confections- Wednesday, August 10, 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

We will learn how to make different types of candy such as fudge, haystacks, lollipops, mints, and more. Participants will learn how to use candy-making equipment and follow directions. Each participant will receive a recipe booklet.

Ages: 10 and up                                Cost: $12

What to bring: Two medium-sized containers for samples.

Cloverbud Residential Camp – Wednesday-Friday, July 6-8

Campers will travel with Mrs. Cynthia to Millstone 4-H Camp in Ellerbe, NC to spend a couple days and nights at 4-H camp. Millstone is located in the sandhills of North Carolina. Campers will sleep in cabins with cabin counselors and enjoy daytime activities including nature, field games, arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, low ropes course with a giant swing!

Ages: 5-8                                          Cost: $230 (partial scholarships available for 4-H members)

What to bring: A detailed list will be sent out to families.
