As we begin to navigate the upcoming school year, N.C. Cooperative Extension of Wake County wants to help provide families with resources and opportunities to engage with the community!

Youth Opportunities 

  • Wake County 4-H Teen Council (ages 13-18). Youth interested in community service, social justice & leadership are invited to join! Email emma.james@wakegov.com for more info.
  • School Enrichment (STEM, embryology, Community Service) kits are available to checkout. Kits are for grades 2-8. Please email 4h@wakegov.com for more info.

Food Resources 

  • Community Food Pantries: A food pantry is a location in a community (sometimes in a church, school, or community center) where people can go to receive free food and other non-food resources.
  •  A Place at the Table, 300 W Hargett St, Raleigh: A pay-what-you-can restaurant serving food at no cost to all who need it!
  • SNAP BenefitsThis program helps households buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet. Apply online, in person, or mail.
  • WIC Benefits: Provides food benefits, nutrition counseling & classes, referrals for healthcare, and more. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women who had a child in the last 12 months, women who had children in the last 6 months, and infants/children up to 5 years old.
  • WCPSS Free & Reduced LunchChildren are eligible to receive school meals for free or at a reduced cost. An application must be filled out online. Children receiving free & reduced lunches can also pick up curbside meals at select schools.

Non-Food Resources 

  • Energy AssistanceOne application covers a variety of financial assistance programs for home heating or cooling.
  • Utility Assistance: Wake County has launched a new utility bill payment assistance program called WakeHELPS to do exactly what the name implies – help households impacted by COVID-19 pay back what they owe to their utility providers.
