Mitchell’s Nursery and Greenhouse was started by Judy and Jim Mitchell in 1979 on an extra lot beside their house. Jim and Judy both graduated from North Carolina State University with BS in horticulture, where they had courses in landscape design, as well as nursery and greenhouse courses. Judy also is a Certified Plant Professional. In 1993, the Mitchells moved the growing nursery to the present location on Dalton Road. The first greenhouse was added in 1996. In 2001, after working in a large greenhouse operation in Raleigh, their son, Jay, came back to help with the growing family business. Since then, they have added 13 more greenhouse bays, 3 of these were added for the spring 2019 growing season. The last 10 are gutter connected, which saves energy. In the summer of 2008, they also installed an energy curtain to conserve more heat. Seven are watered with drip irrigation to conserve water and have rolling benches to grow more in less space.

A new piece of property was purchased down the road from their retail area and was graded to accommodate new tree and shrub beds and growing area for newly potted plants until they are ready for sale. At that time, they will be moved to the retail area at 1088 West Dalton Road.
