On Tuesday, August 13, a group of 41 sheep and goat producers gathered at Sunset Acres in the Capella Community, north of King to learn about sheep and goat flock/herd health.
Twenty-eight participants completed evaluations indicating that they all increased their knowledge on:
  • common disease issues and strategies to promote animal health and
  • vaccinations and appropriate use of animal medications.

Ninety-three percent of the participants plan to adopt best management practices related to meat quality assurance, and internal parasite management. In addition, participants indicated that they could save money (from) unnecessary farm visits from their veterinarian, and have fewer illnesses and losses, as well as healthier animals.

One participant shared that “This is the best event I’ve been to with Extension.”

Prior to the Field Day, a Wool Pool was held for producers to bring their shorn wool. Almost 1,100 pounds of wool was gathered and then transported to Elk Creek, Virginia the next day to be “pooled” with wool from other producers and then baled. Bales were then transported to a Wool Processing facility in South Carolina. They only accept baled wool, and shipping charges for the bales are divided up among the participants. This process allows producers to sell their wool that otherwise they couldn’t market. The dates for 2025 will be August 12-14 in Elk Creek, Virginia and plans are being made to have several Wool Pools in North Carolina to transport the wool to Virginia prior to those dates.
